  • About Whisky
    • Cask StrengthThe term Cask Strength means that when the whisky was removed from the cask, it was not diluted with any water, before it was bottled. Since the alcohol level of whisky is usually around 63% when it goes into the cask, it can still be high when it is selected for bottling. Most standard releases are therefore diluted with water to reduce the alcohol (most commonly to 43% or 46% in SA), as cask strength whiskies are not appealing to general drinkers. In some cases a whisky has a higher alcohol but does not stipulate it as cask strength. Those higher strength releases are displayed here as well. (The American term for cask strength is barrel proof.)
    • Single CaskSINGLE CASK SCOTCH WHISKY A single cask whisky, means that the release is the result of only one cask and thus will be limited in the number of bottles produced. Most standard whiskies are not from a single cask, but from a vatting of multiple casks (even single malts) in order to produce enough bottles. Single casks however, are limited by nature since it is restricted to the size of the cask that is being bottled. Casks do come in different sizes, but by law, for Scotch whisky a cask cannot be larger than 700L, and is more often a 250L hogshead or a 500L butt. Whisky Tip: The American terminology for a cask is a barrel, but in the whisky industry a barrel is a specific type and size, whereas a cask is the umbrella term covering all shapes and sizes.
    • Independent BottlersIndependent Bottlers (commonly referred to as IBs) are whisky companies that do not produce whisky themselves, but rather purchase whiskies from different producers and bottle it under their own brands. IBs play a large role in the whisky industry, and have since the very start, in some cases even predating the official producers (OBs) releasing their whiskies direct to drinkers. The primary benefit of IBs is the variety they offer. Since they do not have standard releases, they don’t have to always produce the same tasting whisky matured for the same duration in the same type of casks. Thus they offer an ever-changing selection of different ages, matured for different periods in different casks, from different whisky producers, and often bottled as cask strength, single casks.
    • Closed DistilleriesAlthough demand for whisky is at a record high, that hasn’t always been the case. Much like the global economy, the whisky industry goes through cycles of highs and lows, and at several points in history, there have been major distillery closures. These distilleries either remain closed (mothballed) hoping to produce whisky again one day, or are totally dismantled/demolished and will never produce whisky again. For obvious reasons, these whiskies are very rare and collectable (with associated price tags sadly), as they represent scarce and dwindling liquid from a bygone era.
