A whisky that is designated as “single cask” denotes that its release is derived exclusively from a solitary cask, resulting in a limited production of bottles. In contrast to most conventional whiskies, which blend together contents from multiple casks (even for single malts) to meet the demand for larger quantities, single cask whiskies remain bound by the size of the specific cask being bottled. Casks are available in various dimensions, although it is legally mandated for Scotch whisky that a cask cannot exceed 700 liters in capacity. More commonly, single cask whiskies are aged in a 250-liter hogshead or a 500-liter butt.
